How Often Should You Paint Each Room In Your House?

There’s many reasons why adding a fresh coat of paint to your home’s interior can be a great idea: it helps to seal out moisture, it can repel dirt, dust and allergens, it can add to your home’s value, and it can make your home more beautiful, and more of a reflection of you!

Below we have listed how often we recommend painting each room of your home:

How Often Should I Paint My Kitchen?

The kitchen is for many people the busiest room in the house, and the messiest. The kitchen is exposed to smoke, grease, spills and stains, among other things, so while it is recommended that you repaint the room often, how often should depend on how much you use it. We recommend painting your kitchen at least every 4 to 6 years. This will keep your kitchen looking fresh, and smelling fresh!

How Often Should I Paint My Living Room?

Like the kitchen, the living room is typically a very busy part of the house. Although it’s usually not as messy as the kitchen, the living room is a place to have fun, play games, and relax, and so it can be the site of some messy accidents every now and then. For this reason, it’s recommended that you use a higher quality, more durable paint in the living room - this way if there is a mess it will be easier to clean up without flaking away at the paint job and ruining it. We recommend painting your living room every 5 to 7 years.

How Often Should I Paint My Dining Room?

The dining room typically isn’t a very messy room, and it’s not as frequently used as the kitchen or living room. We recommend repainting the dining room every five to seven years. It’s unlikely your walls will get stained or ruined in the dining room.

How Often Should I Paint My Bedrooms?

This one varies considerably, despite the fact that of all the rooms in the house, it’s the bedroom that needs the least repainting. Most of the time we’re sleeping in our bedrooms, so there often isn’t much mess, but that’s not always the case! It really depends on how much time you spend in your bedroom, and whether you eat in there, exercise, or cause messes frequently. For a child’s bedroom, there’s going to be a lot more wear and tear on the paint, so it’s best to use a high quality paint with a good finish so that the walls can be easily scrubbed without ruining the paint job. We recommend painting the bedroom every 5 to 7 years for an adult bedroom, and every 2 to 3 years for a child’s bedroom.

How Often Should I Paint My Bathroom?

The bathroom can be quite a dirty place, so it should be painted quite regularly. The paint in a bathroom is subjected to a lot of moisture, dirt and grime buildup. How often you repaint your bathroom will depend on how many people use the bathroom, and how frequently, but generally speaking it’s recommended that you repaint your bathroom every 3 to 4 years so that the paint job isn’t ruined by the moisture.

How Often Should I Paint My Laundry Room?

Much like a bathroom, the laundry room is subject to a lot of moisture over time. For this reason, we recommend repainting your laundry room every 3 to 4 years - the same as the bathroom.

How Often Should I Paint My Hallways?

While people typically aren’t doing many activities in the hallways, the hallways are an area of the home that is subjected to a lot of back and forth traffic, and in a relatively small space. This can cause a lot of accidental damage to the paint, so it’s recommended that you repaint your hallways every 2 to 3 years.

How Often Should I Paint My Trim and Baseboards?

This one depends on where the trim and baseboards are in your home and how much traffic they see. Generally though, you’ll want to repaint your trim and baseboards every 2 to 4 years, because there’s going to be quite a lot of buildup of dirt, muck and dings on the paint.

How Often Should I Paint My Ceilings?

The ceiling doesn’t accrue the same kind of damage as the walls of a house, but over years of exposure to the sun, dust and moisture, a ceiling paint job can start to dull. We recommend you repaint your ceiling every 10 years.
